How do I refund my donors?

Issue a full or partial refund from the Payments page, and what changes on the donation record.

You can refund a contribution taken through your donation page directly from the Payments page. Refunds can be full or partial, and Raise More updates the donation record once Stripe confirms the refund.

Issue a refund

  • Go to www.raisemore.app/payments and open the Transactions tab.

  • The Payments card lists your contributions.

  • Find the transaction you want to refund and open it.

  • Click Begin Refund.

  • Enter the amount. Enter the full amount for a full refund, or less than it for a partial refund.

  • Confirm to send the refund.

The refund goes back to the card the donor originally used. Banks usually take five to ten business days to post it, so tell the donor to expect a short wait.

Partial refunds

A partial refund returns part of the contribution and leaves the rest with your campaign. You can issue more than one partial refund on the same contribution, up to the original amount.

What changes in Raise More

Stripe notifies Raise More when the refund is processed, so you do not need to record anything by hand. On the donor's profile and in your donations table:

  • A fully refunded contribution is marked Refunded, with the original amount struck through. It no longer contributes to Total after refunds on the donor’s profile.

  • A partially refunded contribution is marked Partially refunded and shows the amount that remains alongside the original.

This can take a moment to appear. A contribution that is in a dispute, or that has been through one, shows its dispute state instead of a refund tag. The refund is still recorded in full; the dispute state simply takes precedence in the display.

If it has not updated after a few minutes, contact support.

Fees on a refund

Fees already charged on the original contribution are not returned. Neither the Stripe processing fee nor the Raise More application fee comes back when you refund a donor, so a full refund leaves your campaign out of pocket by the original fees. See the article on transaction costs for the exact rates.

FAQ

Can I cancel a refund after sending it?

Check the amount before submitting and do not assume a refund can be undone. Some eligible card refunds can be canceled in Stripe for a short period before reaching the donor; many cannot. This is not a general undo action in Raise More. Check the actual refund status and see Stripe’s cancellation guidance, or contact support promptly.

Can I refund more than the donor gave?

No. Refunds are capped at the original contribution amount, across all partial refunds combined.

How long does the donor wait to see the money?

Often five to ten business days, depending on the payment method and bank. A refund can remain pending, for example if the available Stripe balance is insufficient. Check the actual refund status instead of promising a posting date.

Should I refund a contribution that got an inquiry or an early fraud warning?

It depends on the case, and it is your call. A refund may resolve the donor’s concern, but it does not guarantee that a bank will not file a dispute. Check for an existing or pending dispute before refunding so you do not reimburse the same gift twice. You still lose the processing fee and the application fee on the original charge, and the contribution itself. An inquiry or a warning does not always become a chargeback, so a refund is not always needed. See How do I handle inquiries, early fraud warnings, and disputes (chargebacks)? for what each one means, and contact support if you want help reading a specific case.

Do I need to update the donation record afterwards?

No. Raise More marks the donation as refunded or partially refunded automatically once Stripe confirms it.
